FROM a Goulburn maiden to a Group Three "mile" is a big jump for any horse.

But Bede Murray believes Stanley's Deed has the potential to win the MGA Insurance Brokers Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle tomorrow.

He just isn't sure whether his charge is mature enough to do it right now.

The Xaar three-year-old colt scored his first win in six starts over 1600m at Goulburn on August 15 and the prospect of a weak Spring Stakes made Murray's decision easier.

"The way things have panned out, there are about three chances in the race and it was worth giving him his chance in it," Murray said.

"He has always shown us a little bit and the win at Goulburn was very tough, considering he led and was headed before fighting back to win by a length.

"This race will tell us a lot of about him and, if he can run well, the Spring Champion Stakes is an option.

"Like a lot of my three-year-olds, we will see the best of him in the autumn."

Stanley's Deed is owned in the same interests as last Saturday's Ming Dynasty winner Predatory Pricer.

Trainer Paul Murray's exciting youngster is also being aimed at the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 4.

Paul Murray said Predatory Pricer would have a light week on the track before backing up in the Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill this weekend.

"He is going to be better at 1800m and the Gloaming fits best with a Spring Champion Stakes preparation," he said.

Meanwhile, Get Up Jude remains on target for the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick on October 4 according to trainer Diane Poidevin-Laine, despite being soundly beaten in the Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

Poidevin-Laine was delighted to see the five-year-old run the fastest final 400m after settling last in a race dominated by tearaway leader Hurrah.

"The way they ran the race, he would have had to break 32 seconds for the final 600m to get anywhere near them," Poidevin-Laine said.

"It was good to see he had the dash back in his legs and we will push on to the Colin Stephen Stakes (at Randwick) in two weeks.

"It is over 2400m, which is his trip and he will probably be a bit closer in running if we have anything to do with it.

"D-day will be the Metropolitan. That's when we will make a decision about Melbourne."
