TWO horsemen from the 12th Light Horse Reserve Unit led celebrations at Fort Scratchley on Saturday to mark the 60th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Reserve Forces.

About 300 past-and-present reservists participated in the ceremony, which recognised their service.

Organiser and Newcastle Regional Council Reserve Forces Day chairman, Major John Spence, said Reserve Forces Day was established in 1998 to recognise the reservists, as little recognition had been given previously.

"Part-time soldiers were looked down on in the past. That's gone now. They [reservists] go where regular soldiers go and that's helped a lot," he said.
