Two Falls, No Injuries

AFTER a week of intense scrutiny about the safety of jumps racing, yesterday's Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington went off without injury to horse or rider.

Hot favourite Toulouse Lautrec was one of two horses who fell on the day, stumbling in front of the stands in the Grand National. But the popular grey was quickly back on his feet, along with jockey Craig Durden.

About 15 animal-rights campaigners held placards against jumping at Flemington's main gate but the most noticeable protest was in the blue skies above the track where a plane twice spelt out "Ban Jumps!" in white smoke. -- TOM REILLY
