A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with riding a horse while drunk after passing drivers complained about his behaviour.

Witnesses complained to police about 4.30pm on Thursday about a man who appeared to be drunk while riding a horse along Lake Road at Glendale. They alleged the man was drinking and yelling as he was riding, failed to give way on a roundabout and rode without holding the reins, police said.

The man was found near Wallsend after he had nearly fallen from the saddle.

A police spokesman said the man had a half-empty bottle of bourbon when officers spoke to him. His partner arranged to have the horse taken home.

The man was charged with riding under the influence of alcohol and will appear in Newcastle Local Court on August 19.
