JOCKEYS Lacey Morrison and Tony Pattillo were taken to hospital following a horror four-horse fall at Ipswich yesterday.
The pile-up occurred on the home turn in the $100,000 Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m). The four horses to come to grief were Street Smart (Phillip Wolfgram), Seconde (Pattillo), Stella Joy (Morrison) and Centinelle (Jason Holder). Wolfgram and Holder were quickly to their feet and rushed to assist the other two fallen riders.Morrison appeared the more seriously injured, lying motionless on the track for some time. When Holder returned to the jockeys' room he said: "Tony [Pattillo] is talking. He's got blood in his mouth but Lacey was knocked right out. She didn't look in a good way and it sounds like she's in a lot of pain. "Horses just came out in front of me. I had no way to avoid it and just came down." Wolfgram, who also returned to the jockeys' room unaided, said: "Lacey was the first to fall."It looked like someone galloped on her horse's back left and dragged it down. "We couldn't do anything to avoid it." She gained consciousness before being loaded into the ambulance to be taken to Ipswich Base Hospital. The club doctor was uncertain of the extent of her injuries. Pattillo was placed in a neck brace and later reported to be suffering neck and hip injuries. There was further drama in the stewards' room after the event when the panel upheld a protest by Rick McMahon, rider of the Bryan Guy-trained Bareena. Bareena finished a short head second to the Michael Moroney-trained Bella Valentina (Scott Seamer). However, stewards upheld McMahon's protest alleging interference over the final 100m. They said Seamer's mount had shifted out under pressure, bumped Bareena, and took that mare several horses wider on the track in the run to the post. Dance Girl Dance was a neck away third in the listed event.
