THE Scone Cup Carnival provided the Upper Hunter's annual horse festival with its best grand finale ever, Scone Race Club treasurer Noel Leckie said yesterday.

Perfect autumn weather greeted a record track-side crowd of 10,000 people for the eight-race meeting.

"It was an absolutely fantastic day," Mr Leckie said.

"You couldn't beat the weather and accommodation throughout the district was booked out."

The crowd included trainers Lee Freedman and Gai Waterhouse while Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who last month bought the premier Woodlands stud, had the winner of a feature race.
