OWNERS of Bauer, second across the line in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, were stunned at the revelation their horse ran faster than the winner Viewed.

While judges correctly awarded Australia's greatest prize in racing to the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed by a flared nostril, microchip technology has proven Bauer, part-owned by former cricket champion Simon O'Donnell, travelled the race distance of 3200 metres faster.

Microchips, inserted into the saddlecloths on all runners, showed Bauer finished in three minutes, 20.40 seconds, with Viewed 100th of a second behind.

"The timing devices are in the saddles, whereas the judges decide who has won by which horse's head crosses the line first," O'Donnell said. "Sadly, our guy is a bit smaller than Viewed.">Full story: Page 8
