Farewell To Zulu

Illawarra Mercury

KEMBLA Grange trainer Gwenda Markwell bid farewell to her favourite horse Grand Zulu this week, but might have unearthed a new star at Wyong on Tuesday.

Markwell was coming to terms with the end of Grand Zulu's career as Zaretti broke the 1300m track record at Wyong.

"Ricky (Grand Zulu) just came to the end of the line," she said of the horse which gave her Group One glory in The BMW in 2004.

Zaretti was bought at the Written Bloodstock sale a couple of years ago for $180,000 and has had big raps in the Markwell yard. He was gelded before this preparation and it has made a big difference.

"That was his best effort but he has had his problems and it will be interesting where he goes from here," Markwell said.
