I can safely say I have never seen the word "pigroot" in print. Until just now. For, as the week of all things horsey is upon us, I am reminded of a day when I was small when things in our house changed just a little bit. I was aged 10 and my mum decided she would try horse riding again. She was pretty pony-ish as a girl (shout out to Destiny - could she have chosen a more "daddy I want a pony" name for her steed?), but it had been a while since she had got a leg over, so to speak. This particular summer, we had rented a house by the beach and off she went, wind in hair, trails blazing, to get back on the horse. One pigroot later and back she came, both arms in plaster. The summer was spent watching my brave mother eat sausages from the table's edge and drink riesling through a straw. Personal hygiene became a family activity for poor Ma, if you know what I mean. There comes a time in all children's lives when they realise their parents are not infallible. Needless to say, that penny dropped about the same time she asked me to help her to the loo. It was a long six weeks.
